Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Turkey's state-run Anatolia News Agency wrote, referring to this trip, that "the leader of the new Syrian government met with a high-ranking delegation from Spain on Thursday in Damascus, which was the first official meeting between the two countries since the fall of the regime.
The Syrian News Agency (SANA) published pictures of the meeting between Abu Mohammad Al-Jolani and Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez and his accompanying delegation, but no further details of the content of the meeting were provided.
In recent weeks, several high-ranking European delegations, including the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and Italy, have made official visits to Damascus. According to the announcement of the Spanish Foreign Ministry, Albarez will attend the flag-raising ceremony at his embassy in Damascus.
Since the departure of the ambassador of this EU member state from Syria in 2012, the Spanish flag has not been raised in the Damascus embassy.
After suspending diplomatic activities for more than a decade, Spain's foreign minister raised the flag of his country at the embassy in Damascus.
"I am honored to be here in person," Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez said at the embassy, where the Spanish national anthem was played, according to AFP.
He added: "Raising the Spanish flag again is a sign of the hope we have for the future of Syria and the commitment we convey to the Syrian people for a better future."
In the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain before this trip, it is also stated that Albarez will meet with the representatives of the interim government and civil society of Syria.
The Spanish Foreign Minister also said before his trip to Syria: "The message I want to send is a message of support for Syria." But we also have red lines. Syria must be peaceful. "Syria must be inclusive and the rights of all, including the rights of women and ethnic and religious minorities, must be respected."
