Mahmoud Abbas: The administration of Gaza should be in the hands of the Palestinian Authority, not Hamas!
The head of the Palestinian Authority claimed in a statement that, according to the laws, only the organizations under his command have the right to govern in Gaza. According to the spokesman of the organization, “Hamas must withdraw from the government and give a real opportunity to the Palestinian people.”
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): In the first official reaction since the announcement of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, announced that the organization is ready to assume “full responsibility” for the Gaza Strip.
According to the official Palestinian news agency (Wafa), the Palestinian Authority Presidency statement said: "The Palestinian Authority, like the other occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Jerusalem, has legal and political jurisdiction over the Gaza Strip and has made all the necessary preparations to assume its full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, and its administrative and security teams are fully prepared to carry out their duties to alleviate the suffering of the people, return the displaced, and resume basic services."
The statement continued: "The Palestinian Authority Presidency calls on the international community, neighboring countries, and donor countries to provide urgent humanitarian assistance so that the Palestinian Authority can fulfill its responsibilities towards the people who are exposed to a genocide in the Gaza Strip and severe Israeli attacks and aggression in the West Bank and Jerusalem."
Following this statement, Jamal Nazzal, spokesman for the Fatah movement (the group that governs the Palestinian Authority), told Sputnik: "We alone should govern in Gaza."
He added: "No institution other than the Palestinian Authority has the right to rule the Gaza Strip, and no country can participate in the administration of a province or region." Jamal Nazzal also claimed: "If Hamas is able to rebuild the Gaza Strip, then it should govern itself, but there is no guarantee for this to happen except for the existence of the Palestinian National Authority."

Israeli officials had previously said that Gaza should not be governed by any Palestinian group, including Hamas or Fatah; although Tel Aviv has not offered any alternative, almost all countries, including the Biden administration, emphasize the need for Gaza to be governed by the Palestinians.

After the withdrawal of the Israeli army in 2005, control of the Gaza Strip fell to the Fatah movement and the Palestinian Authority for two years, but during Hamas' victory in the second round of elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council on January 25, 2006, the internal crisis between Fatah and Hamas escalated, and finally, the fighters of Izz al-Din al-Qassam and other resistance groups expelled Fatah security elements from Gaza on June 14, 2007.

Meanwhile, Fatah spokesman Jamal Nazzal stressed in an interview with Sky News Arabic that the Palestinian Authority rejects any future arrangement for Gaza that does not include it.
Nazzal claimed: “Hamas must withdraw from the government and give the Palestinian people a real chance.”
He added that the PA, despite its reduced role in the Gaza Strip since 2007, has continued to fulfill its responsibilities in financing education, health and infrastructure.
Nazzal also stressed the importance of Arab and international support for the Palestinian government as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, claiming: “The world recognizes the Palestinian government and will not interact with a Hamas-led government unless elections are held in the future in accordance with democratic frameworks.”
On the other hand, Hussam Al-Dajni, a professor of political science at Al-Umma University in Gaza, believes that any future vision for governing the Gaza Strip must be based on a comprehensive strategy that includes all Palestinian parties.
“Gaza needs its children, the international community and the region, because what has happened in the Gaza Strip is like an earthquake,” he explained.
Al-Dajni said those who facilitated the ceasefire agreement do not accept Hamas or the PA as the main entity in Gaza.

The US plan for governing Gaza
On the other hand, Israel has clearly stated its opposition to the presence of Hamas or the Palestinian Authority as the governing entity in Gaza; according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the US plan includes the establishment of an interim government for the Gaza Strip with the participation of Palestinian representatives and coordinated by the United Nations.
Regarding these arrangements, Jamal Nazzal said: “International agreements, such as the 2005 Border Crossings Agreement, emphasize that any governance of Gaza must be carried out with the participation of the Palestinian Authority and partner countries.”
On the other hand, Hossam Al-Dajni stressed that the next stage requires “a unified Palestinian vision that brings together all parties and ensures everyone’s participation in the reconstruction and administration of the Gaza Strip.”

This comes as the ceasefire agreement in Gaza is set to begin on Sunday, January 19, with the approval of the Israeli cabinet.
