Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The signing of the Comprehensive Joint Document on Cooperation between Iran and Russia is the result of about three years of follow-ups, correspondence and visits by officials from the two countries. This document includes an introduction and 47 articles and covers all areas of bilateral relations.
The Comprehensive Joint Document on Cooperation between Iran and Russia is actually an updated text of the previous agreement and is set to replace the current bilateral document on bilateral relations and principles of bilateral cooperation, which was signed in Moscow in 2001. The new document was approved by the two countries in early summer 2024, and the parties were waiting for the right time for it to be signed by the two presidents.
This treaty mentions 30 areas of cooperation between the two countries, with priority given to economic, trade, transportation, oil and gas, the Caspian Sea, the judiciary, cooperation between the two countries in international and regional organizations, parliamentary cooperation, the use of peaceful nuclear energy, cooperation in the fields of health, medicine, science and technology, the environment, sports, security, defense, military and law enforcement.
In addition to economic and defense cooperation, this treaty is an important step towards consolidating the strategic partnership between Iran and Russia and can have a significant impact on expanding trade relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia. The volume of trade between Iran and Russia has reached $3.3 billion in the past 9 months, with a growth of 14.7 percent. The signing of this treaty primarily indicates the development of relations between Iran and Russia and opens new horizons for the development of cooperation between the two countries in all areas.
According to the Iranian Foreign Minister, this treaty covers all aspects of cooperation between the two countries and pays special attention to three main areas: economic cooperation, scientific and technological cooperation, and cooperation in the fields of culture and tourism. However, as Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has also clarified, the signing of this treaty is not against any third party and is a treaty for cooperation between Iran and Russia. It regulates the relations between the two countries and outlines the prospects for cooperation and has not created any prohibitions for the relations of the two countries with third countries.
