US halts all foreign aid, except for Israel and Egypt
The US has halted almost all foreign aid to Israel and Egypt, except for emergency food and military funding.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): US Secretary of State Marco Rabiot said in a memo to his staff on Friday, January 24: "No new funds for new aid or extensions of existing aid should be allocated until each proposed new aid or extension has been reviewed and approved."

According to the State Department memo, a decision on whether to continue, change or stop these programs will be made within the next 85 days after a review by the Secretary of State. During this period, the State Department can issue waivers.

On his first day in office, Donald Trump ordered a 90-day freeze on foreign development aid to review its effectiveness and alignment with his foreign policy.

The State Department memo justifying the freeze said it was impossible for the new administration to assess whether existing foreign aid commitments were “not duplicative, effective, and consistent with President Trump’s foreign policy,” according to VOA.

The sweeping order affects all U.S. development and military assistance to other countries, including Ukraine. Former President Joe Biden has provided billions of dollars in military aid to Kiev since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine began.

The move comes as World Relief, a Christian humanitarian group, has urged the Trump administration not to cut off the flow of vital aid, including disaster relief.
