Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: US President Donald Trump once again raised his threatening positions regarding taking back the Panama Canal and announced that very strong events would occur if his request was opposed.
According to CNN, Trump on Sunday reiterated his promise to take back the Panama Canal and warned of strong measures if Panamanian officials objected to this issue.
Trump's warning to Panama is being given as a result of the escalating diplomatic disputes with this Central American country over China's presence around this important and vital waterway.
Trump told reporters: "China is managing the Panama Canal while it was not given to this country to manage it. Giving this canal to Panama was a foolish act, yet they violated the agreement. Now we either take back the canal or something very powerful will happen.
Trump's threats came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Panamanian President Raul Molino on his first foreign trip as the US's top diplomat.
Trump's threats to take over the Panama Canal came at a time when Molino told Rubio that Panama's sovereignty over the canal was non-negotiable.
He also pointed to US concerns about China's alleged influence around the waterway and stressed that it would not renew the 2017 memorandum of understanding to join China's Belt and Road Initiative.
Earlier, Panama's Foreign Minister had explicitly stated in response to Donald Trump's threats that the sovereignty of the Panama Canal was non-negotiable.
