Afghanistan has paid more than $220 million to import electricity this year
Afghanistan has paid $227 million to buy electricity from neighboring countries this year, officials said.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Officials of the Afghan Electricity Company (AEC) raised the issue at a press conference in Kabul today, adding that more than $28 million has been paid to domestic electricity generation companies this year.
 
Electricity shortages and lack of access to electricity are constant challenges in Afghanistan; This has made it difficult for citizens to carry on with their daily lives.
 
Afghanistan sources nearly 80 percent of its electricity from Iran, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and only 38 percent of its citizens have access to electricity.
 
Meanwhile, Abdul Bari Omar, chief executive officer of the Afghanistan Electricity Supply Company (AEC), said the company had designed a 505-megawatt project to increase electricity generation from domestic sources.
 
He added that Afghanistan has good capacity to build solar and wind power plants and centers.
 
The head of the country's electricity company said the company was working on technical stages and encouraging investors in this field.
