Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): After weeks of clashes at the Torkham crossing, Afghan and Pakistani border forces agreed on Sunday (March 9), Pakistani officials said. The ceasefire was aimed at reducing tensions and resuming talks, a Pakistani official said, citing the Anadolu Agency.
The Torkham crossing, which was closed by Pakistan late last month over a dispute over the construction of a new post on the Afghan side, will remain closed until the next round of talks. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has not yet commented on the official agreement.
In addition, yesterday, the Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Chamber of Commerce held a meeting at the Torkham crossing with the aim of reopening the trade crossing without the presence of government officials from both countries.
The Torkham crossing is one of the most important border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which is of great importance for trade and the movement of people. Disputes between the two countries over border and security issues have always caused short-term and long-term tensions.
In recent months, especially as a result of Pakistan’s construction in the area, conflicts and clashes between border forces have increased. This two-day ceasefire and trade meetings at Torkham are considered a step towards reducing tensions and resuming trade relations.
