Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: The Pakistani "Jafar Express" passenger train with about 450 passengers and crew was traveling from Quetta in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when it was attacked by militants.
According to Reuters, the militant and separatist group "Baloch Liberation Army" claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement and announced that its forces had taken passengers, including security forces, on the train hostage.
The militant and separatist group also announced that 6 soldiers were killed and 450 passengers were taken hostage in the attack, and that it would execute all the hostages if Pakistani security forces carried out an operation.
However, security forces and local officials did not confirm the hostage-taking.
The Balochistan provincial government declared a state of emergency and put all institutions on alert.
Militancy in Balochistan, Pakistan, has been going on for decades, and separatist groups in the province have been attacking government forces, the army, and Chinese interests in the region.
