Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Engineer Ruhullah Amin, head of the climate change department of the National Environmental Protection Agency, said in an interview with Ava that the project "Community-based climate change response through afforestation for livelihood improvement" is a large-scale project with significant social and environmental impacts.
According to Amin, the project was among the defined projects of Afghanistan that were recently approved by the Global Environment Facility in the Council of the Least Developed Countries Fund and the Special Climate Change Fund at a value of $10 million.
According to Amin, the project is to be implemented in Kunar and Badakhshan provinces for a period of five years and will mainly focus on strengthening the resilience of local communities and improving the livelihoods of the people.
He continued by stating that the project includes a wide range of activities, including programs such as strengthening resilient agriculture, natural resource management, preventing land degradation, increasing pasture and forest areas, introducing modern irrigation systems, and introducing various solutions against drought and floods.
Mr. Amin added that the project was approved based on the joint work of the National Environmental Protection Agency and the United Nations Development Program and is expected to be effective in reducing the effects of climate change in the targeted areas, as well as improving the environmental situation and increasing the livelihoods of local communities.
Previously, the National Environmental Protection Agency had also announced in a press release that this project with a budget of $9.98 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) was approved at the Fund’s Council meeting.
Of this total budget, $8.98 million was provided through the Global Environment Facility and another $1 million as co-financing from the internal resources of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
It is worth noting that this project will be implemented in the provinces of Badakhshan and Kunar over the next five years and aims to strengthen forestry and improve the livelihoods of local communities against climate change.
