The Iraqi presidency also announced that President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid visited Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Ishaq Fayyad, a Shiite religious leader who is hospitalized in a Baghdad hospital.
“Grand Ayatollah Fayyad is highly respected for his support of moderation, tolerance, and national unity,” the presidency said in a statement.
Born in the Ghazni province of Afghanistan, Ayatollah Muhammad Ishaq Fayyad is known for his moderate stances and efforts to strengthen Islamic and national unity in Iraq.
As a jurist and professor at the Najaf Seminary, he has also had a great influence on educating students and promoting Islamic thought. Ayatollah Fayyad has always emphasized the importance of moderation and peaceful coexistence between different ethnic groups and religions, and has played an active role in these areas.
He came to Najaf from Ghazni in 1328 AH to complete his seminary studies and has become known as one of the great Shiite authorities in the past few decades. He is ninety-five years old.
