In this regard, in addition to criticism from political party leaders, Ekrem Imamoglu's supporters and supporters held protest rallies in Istanbul. Protesters chanted slogans in support of Imamoglu on Vatan Street in Istanbul, in front of the regional police headquarters.
This is despite the fact that any gatherings in the city have been banned.
In addition to these developments, the leader of the Republican People's Party, of which İmamoğlu is also a member, called the arrest and charges a coup and called on people to gather at 2 p.m. local time at the Republican People's Party headquarters across the country.
In a speech on the occasion, İmamoğlu's leader Özgür Özel said: "This coup attempt is against the will of the people. With this action, the people's right to choose whoever they want has been usurped."
Emphasizing that this operation is the result of Erdogan's intolerance of defeat, he said: "Erdogan cannot accept the defeat he suffered in the previous elections (March 31).
On the other hand, after the news of Ekrem İmamoğlu's arrest was published, police forces entered the university and clashed with students following a gathering of his supporters at Istanbul University.
