Wave of Arrests in Turkey; Protest Suppression Continues
The Turkish Interior Ministry announced that security forces have arrested more than 1,400 protesters during six-day protests against the arrest of the Istanbul mayor.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that 1,418 protesters have been arrested since last Wednesday in the demonstrations, following six days of demonstrations that the government has declared “illegal.”

He explained: “While 979 people are still in custody, 478 will be brought to court today. We will not tolerate those who try to create panic in the streets and attack our national and moral values, as well as harm our police forces.”

The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a fierce opponent of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, along with a number of other Turkish political figures, on charges of corruption and links to terrorist groups has sparked widespread protests in Turkey.

Protests have erupted in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and other cities, with violent clashes between protesters and police. Security forces have used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters.

The arrests have raised deep concerns about the state of democracy in Turkey. Opponents see the move as an attempt to eliminate rivals from the upcoming presidential election, while the Turkish government has denied the allegations and claims that the courts act independently.
