Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: According to media reports, last night’s attack on the Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur resulted in a horrific massacre.
The director of the Ministry of Health of the province announced in an interview with Al Jazeera that the number of people killed in the attack has reached more than 100. Evidence indicates that most of the victims of the incident were women and children.
The attack took place in a situation where fierce fighting has been going on between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Response Forces for nearly two years. During this period, it is estimated that more than 20,000 civilians have lost their lives and 14 million others have been displaced.
Ongoing fighting in Sudan has caused major destruction of the country’s economic and civil infrastructure. More than half of Sudan’s 45 million people are reported to be suffering from hunger and food insecurity. Last month, 71 people died of hunger in the Omdurman neighborhood of Khartoum alone.
This situation indicates a deep and serious crisis in Sudan that requires urgent attention and action from the international community.
