He added: “Two million and 914 thousand tons of goods worth $941 million have been exported to Afghanistan through the Mahirud border. This border is the shortest transit route from Farah to Bandar Abbas and reduces the route by more than 500 kilometers.”
The governor of South Khorasan also noted that more than 38 percent of Iran’s exports to Afghanistan have been made through the Mahirud border market. He emphasized the completion of road infrastructure on the common border with Afghanistan and added: “Afghan traders have declared the Mahirud border market route as the shortest way to access the ports of Chabahar and Bandar Abbas and have called for facilitating trade and export activities.”
Meanwhile, Seyed Rasoul Mohajer, Deputy Minister of Economic Diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the accompanying delegation met and discussed with the governor and traders of the province during a visit to Farah province.
Referring to the strengthening of South Khorasan’s relations with Afghanistan, Mohajer stated: “With the increase in South Khorasan’s interactions with the provinces of Herat and Farah in Afghanistan, economic exchanges between the two countries will expand. Our traders should know that the economic face of Afghanistan has changed and it is necessary to have more contacts with our neighbors.”
According to recent reports, the transit of goods from the Mahirud border to Afghanistan has increased by 735 percent in the past three months compared to the same period last year. This growth indicates the increasing importance of this border in trade exchanges between the two countries.
