American media: China
At the height of the trade war between Beijing and the United States, an American media outlet has claimed that China's military budget is between $330 and $450 billion.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): While China recently announced its 2025 defense budget of $245 billion, the National Interest, citing Western security experts and analysts, claimed that the budget announced by Beijing is equivalent to only 1.5 percent of China's gross domestic product and is much lower than independent estimates by American security agencies.

The report also claimed that according to the US Department of Defense's estimate in the China Military Power Report for 2024, China's actual military budget may be between 40 and 90 percent higher than the officially announced figures. Accordingly, China's actual military spending this year is likely between $330 and $450 billion.

On the other hand, US Senator Dan Sullivan has also claimed that China's actual military budget is up to $700 billion.

However, the Chinese Communist Party has officially announced that its military budget has grown by 7.2% for the past two years, but analysts warn that this figure is merely a repetition of the Chinese government’s control and vague narratives.

The National Interest continued that, given China’s impressive advances in hypersonic missile technology, stealth fighters, ballistic submarines, and increased production of nuclear weapons, it is hard to believe that China’s announced military budget is accurate.

The American media outlet argued that a key point in analyzing China’s military budget is a phenomenon called “military-civilian fusion.” Many technology companies, including tech giants like Baidu, directly or indirectly serve China’s defense industry. Chinese shipping companies also participate in military exercises related to possible attacks on Taiwan.

These figures were presented at the height of the US-Washington tariff war, with no evidence to substantiate these claims and only a number of speculations.

However, according to the National Interest report, security experts are demanding that US intelligence and military agencies provide more unclassified and transparent estimates of China's actual defense spending so that the government and Congress can adopt more effective security policies against this strategic rival.
