Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): A spokesman for the Hamas movement announced that it is ready to release all remaining Israeli prisoners in exchange for an end to the Gaza war.
According to Reuters, a senior Hamas official said that the movement wants a comprehensive agreement to end the Gaza war and exchange all Israeli prisoners for Palestinian prisoners in Israel. These remarks were made in rejection of the temporary ceasefire offer by Israel.
Khalil al-Hayyah, the leader of the Hamas negotiating team in Gaza, announced in a televised speech that the group will no longer accept temporary agreements.
Instead, al-Hayya said Hamas was ready to immediately enter into “comprehensive negotiations” to release all remaining prisoners in its custody in exchange for an end to the Gaza war, the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and the reconstruction of Gaza.
Citing statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, al-Hayya said: “Netanyahu and his government are using partial agreements as cover for their political program, which is based on continuing the war of annihilation and famine, even if the cost is sacrificing all their prisoners (hostages).”
“We will not be part of implementing this policy,” he added.
Egyptian mediators are trying to revive the January ceasefire agreement that halted the fighting in Gaza before it collapsed last month. But there has been little sign of progress, as both Israel and Hamas blame each other.
The latest round of talks in Cairo on Monday to revive the ceasefire and free Israeli prisoners ended without any apparent progress, Palestinian and Egyptian sources said.
Israel had proposed a 45-day ceasefire in Gaza to allow for the release of prisoners and the start of indirect talks to end the war. Hamas has already rejected one of Israel’s conditions — disarmament. In his speech, al-Hayya accused Israel of presenting a counter-offer with “impossible conditions.”
Hamas released 38 Israeli prisoners during the ceasefire that began on January 19. In March, the Israeli military resumed its ground and air operations against Gaza, abandoning the ceasefire after Hamas rejected an offer to extend it without ending the war.
Israeli officials say the operation will continue until the remaining 59 prisoners are released and Gaza is disarmed. Hamas insists it will only release the hostages as part of a deal to end the war and has rejected demands for disarmament.
