Born on December 17, 1936, in Argentina with the real name Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis received the rank of cardinal from Pope John Paul II in 2001. Bergoglio was elected pope in 2013, replacing Benedict XVI, and took the title Francis. He was the first member of the Jesuit order, the first pope from the Americas, and the first non-European pope after Gregory III.
