Trump backs down on tough trade stance against China
In recent statements, US President Donald Trump announced a significant reduction in tariffs against China and expressed hope that trade talks with Beijing will lead to an agreement; this is while the overall level of tariffs remains at 145%.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Trump announced in a speech: “145 percent is a lot. But it will not stay that high Tariffs will be reduced significantly, but it will not go to zero.”

He also emphasized his optimism about reaching a trade agreement with China, saying: “We will be very good, they will be very good and we will see what happens. But ultimately, they have to make a deal, otherwise they cannot do business in the United States.”

Trump cited his good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping as the main reason for optimism about the agreement. The White House also announced hours ago that it is preparing the ground for an agreement with China to calm financial markets and worried investors.

Trump continued: "China cannot deceive us, it will not happen. We will treat China very well and we will have a good relationship with President Xi. But they earn billions of dollars a year and they are strengthening their military, so this trend will not continue."

In this regard, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said in a private meeting with investors that he expects trade tensions between Washington and Beijing to decrease. China, in turn, has imposed retaliatory tariffs on American goods.

Trump finally announced that if there is no agreement with trading partners, after the 90-day pause, his team will adjust the tariffs again. According to a White House spokesman, the US government has so far received 18 proposals from different countries as part of the trade negotiations.
