Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: According to Euro News, the epicenter of the 6.2-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday was in the Sea of Marmara at a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was only 40 kilometers from Istanbul.
According to the Turkish Interior Minister, the earthquake on Wednesday lasted 13 seconds and was recorded after more than a hundred aftershocks. The strongest aftershock was 5.9 on the Richter scale.
Meanwhile, experts have warned that the Istanbul metropolis, home to 16 million people, has a 64 percent chance of experiencing at least one magnitude 7 earthquake by 2030.
Turkish authorities have urged citizens in quake-hit areas to avoid entering buildings that may be damaged.
They also said those who do not wish to return to their homes can take shelter in mosques and sports centers.
There have been 378 reports of structural damage to buildings.
Turkey is a seismically active country due to the presence of two major faults. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria in February 2023. More than 53,000 people were killed in the quake in Turkey. Six thousand people also died in Syria.
