Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The power outage also caused heavy traffic on the roads and trapping a number of people in elevators, media reported.
Spain's electricity regulator said the cause of the outage was not yet known and it could take six to ten hours to restore power.
Following the incident, Spanish and Portuguese authorities have formed crisis committees and efforts have begun to identify the cause of the power outage. The Spanish government has also announced that it has allocated all resources to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
The cities of Lisbon, Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and Valencia are among the areas affected. The disruption began around 12:30 Central European Time.
