Hezbollah leader says Lebanese gov’t must do more to end Israeli attacks
Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has called on the Lebanese government to work harder to end daily Israeli attacks in the country, a day after Israel carried out airstrikes on the southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital Beirut for the third time since a ceasefire agreement was reached in late November.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Monitoring: Qassem said in a televised address on Monday that Hezbollah had implemented the ceasefire agreement that ended the 14-month war, but Israel had continued its relentless airstrikes.
Qassem’s comments came as the Israeli military said it had carried out more than 50 strikes in Lebanon this month, which it said were in response to threats against Israel and Hezbollah that it said were violating a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
Human rights groups have condemned Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, saying they violate the ceasefire agreement.
On Sunday, Israeli warplanes targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut after issuing a warning about an hour earlier, in the third Israeli attack on the area since the November ceasefire. The Israeli military said it had struck a precision-guided missile facility.
Following the attack, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of undermining stability in Lebanon and escalating tensions. He said the Israeli strikes posed “real threats to security” in the region.
“An aggression targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut. This attack has no justification... This is a political attack aimed at changing the rules by force,” Qassem said of Sunday’s attack. “The resistance has adhered 100 percent to the [ceasefire] agreement, and I tell the government authorities that your duty is to ensure protection,” Qassem said, adding that Lebanese authorities should contact supporters of the ceasefire to pressure Israel to stop its attacks.
“Pressure America and make it understand that Lebanon cannot rise if the aggression does not stop,” Qassem said, referring to Lebanese officials. He added that the United States has interests in Lebanon and “will ensure the stability of these interests.” Qassem said the priority should be a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, an end to Israeli attacks on the country, and the release of Lebanese who have been imprisoned in Israel since the war officially ended on November 27.
Hezbollah began firing missiles, drones, and rockets into Israel a day after an attack by its ally Hamas on October 7, 2023, and Israel responded with a massive bombardment of Gaza. Some 1,200 people were killed in Israel and 251 others were kidnapped in southern Israel during the offensive.
The war flared up last September when Israel launched a wave of airstrikes across Lebanon, assassinating most of the group’s top leaders. The fighting has left more than 4,000 dead in Lebanon, most of them civilians.
The Lebanese government announced earlier this month that 190 people have been killed and 485 injured in Lebanon by Israeli attacks since the ceasefire came into effect./Aljazeera
