Torkham in the spotlight of the Ministry of Health; Emphasis on improving health services for returnees
Following the increase in the number of refugees returning from Pakistan and concerns about their health status, the Acting Minister of Public Health, during a visit to the Torkham crossing, emphasized improving the quality of health services, providing equipment, and addressing the needs of returnees immediately.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The Ministry of Public Health has announced that Maulvi Noor Jalal Jalali, the Acting Minister of the Ministry, along with a delegation, traveled to the Torkham crossing to assess the status of health services for returnee refugees.

According to a press release issued by the ministry today (Sunday, May 4), Mr. Jalali visited health centers and met with patients during this visit.

He ordered the officials and employees of these centers to take the necessary measures to improve the quality of health services, provide medical equipment and medicines, and pay attention to other needs of returnees.

This is despite the fact that thousands of undocumented migrants are being deported from Pakistan and are returning to the country through border crossings every day. Many of these people, especially women and children, are in poor health and require urgent health services.

According to reports from the World Health Organization, since the start of the process of deporting undocumented migrants from Pakistan until the end of January this year, more than 272,000 Afghan returnees have benefited from the health services of the organization and its partners. These services have included primary and secondary health care, mental health, vaccinations and trauma.

The Children's Protection Organization has also warned that in the returnee camps in border areas, due to the lack of clean water, limited access to health services and inadequate living conditions, the risk of the spread of various diseases has increased, especially respiratory infections and diarrhea.

Given the increasing number of returnees and their inadequate living conditions in border areas, providing quality and urgent health services is of particular importance.

The Ministry of Public Health’s efforts to visit and directly assess health facilities are a positive step towards improving the health status of returnees. However, to address the existing challenges, there is a need for continued cooperation with international organizations and provision of sufficient resources to prevent the spread of diseases and health crises.
