Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: According to a press release issued by the ministry’s press office, the session was held with the aim of promoting the culture of hand washing in health institutions, especially water stations.
In this session, the Deputy Minister of Health Services of the Ministry of Public Health emphasized the observance of hygiene principles in healthcare settings and stated that “cleanliness is not only a health issue, but also part of the teachings of the holy religion of Islam.” He added that regular hand washing can effectively prevent the transmission of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, pneumonia, and COVID-19.
Next, Dr. Wahdat Alokozay, Director General of Therapeutic Medicine, spoke about the need to provide the necessary facilities for access to water and soap in hospitals and said that the lack of these facilities in some medical centers is one of the main obstacles to disease prevention. He emphasized that proper and continuous hand washing should become a habit.
The meeting also emphasized that officials should seriously implement the guidelines of the Ministry of Public Health on personal and environmental hygiene in order to provide better quality health services in a more hygienic environment.
The issue of observing hand hygiene has been one of the most central recommendations of the World Health Organization in recent decades. Especially after the outbreak of the coronavirus, its importance has doubled. Afghanistan (the country) also needs to build a culture in this field more than ever, given its weak health infrastructure.
According to statistics previously released by the ministry, more than 22,000 cases of communicable diseases were registered in provincial hospitals during the past solar year, many of which could have been prevented through proper handwashing.
Observers say that holding such meetings, although small in scale, plays a key role in building the foundation of a healthy society. In a situation where health resources are limited and challenges such as shortage of medicines, lack of clean water and deterioration of medical centers surround the country's health system, paying attention to simple but effective measures such as handwashing can prevent many diseases. This message needs to reach the villages and homes of the people from the ministry level and move from the meeting stage to the practical implementation stage.
