Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): While Western media had reported yesterday that Mertz had succeeded in forming a coalition to form a new government, he suffered an "embarrassing defeat" in the German parliament.
The leader of the Christian Democratic Party failed to win a majority of votes in the first round of voting to assume the position of Chancellor of Germany. Friedrich Mertz, who has been the main candidate for the position of Chancellor since his party's victory in the election, won 310 votes, six votes short of the required majority in the Bundestag.
Western media, referring to his and his party's success with other parties in forming a new German coalition government, called Mertz's failure to win a vote an "embarrassing" defeat.
Euronews reported that this is the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany that a new chancellor has failed to secure a majority of votes.
The German parliament has reportedly been adjourned as political groups discuss the next steps.
According to Reuters, the German parliament has 14 days from today to elect Mertz or a new person as chancellor.
