Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works, said in a press release today (Tuesday, May 6) that Maulvi Mohammad Ishaq Sahibzada, Deputy Minister for Railways of the Ministry of Public Works, met and discussed with Saif Mohammad Al-Kutbi, the UAE’s Special Representative for the Country, and his accompanying delegation in Kabul.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the strategic role of railway infrastructure in the country’s regional and international connectivity and common areas of cooperation, especially in the area of investment in railways.
The Minister of Railways emphasized in his speech that there are suitable platforms for investment in the country and that interested countries can take advantage of these opportunities to play an active role in regional railway connectivity. He added that the establishment of railways will not only strengthen foreign trade, but will also provide employment and sustainable development within the country.
On the other hand, Saif Mohammed Al Kutbi, the UAE’s special representative, said that his country is committed to implementing new projects, especially in the railway sector, and is trying to encourage Arab businessmen and investors to invest in this area. According to him, the UAE wants comprehensive cooperation in the field of the country’s transportation infrastructure.
Over the past two decades, railway projects in the country have progressed largely with financial and technical support from foreign countries, including China, Iran, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The Aqina, Hairatan, and Khaf-Herat railways are among the projects that are part of the regional rail connectivity master plan.
The United Arab Emirates has also tried to expand its economic and political presence in the region in recent years. Frequent visits by its officials to Kabul and economic summits indicate Abu Dhabi’s interest in playing a role in developing the country’s basic infrastructure. This approach is doubly important as other regional powers compete in transit projects.
According to experts, the UAE’s commitment to investing in railway projects reflects the country’s understanding of the importance of our strategic geography; a geography that, if properly exploited, could become one of the key transportation corridors of Central and South Asia. Investment in the railway sector will not only benefit the domestic economy, but also highlight the country's role in connecting regional markets. If these partnerships reach a practical stage, we can expect the country to soon transform from a transit route to an important trade hub.
