Friedrich Mertz Becomes German Chancellor
Friedrich Mertz, who failed to win the necessary votes to become German Chancellor in this morning's Bundestag vote, won the necessary votes on Tuesday evening in the second round of voting.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: In this morning's vote, the speaker of the German parliament announced that Mertz did not win the maximum 316 votes needed.

Mertz's Christian Democratic Union-Christian Social Union bloc won the February parliamentary elections, but needs at least one other party partner to form a government, having won 28.5 percent of the vote.

Mertz, 69, agreed to form a cabinet with the Social Democrats, who won only 16 percent of the vote in the February elections.

Before Mertz, there is no chancellor in post-war German history who has failed to win the support of parliament in the first round of voting.
