Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): In a significant development, US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday (Tuesday, May 6) that US airstrikes on Ansarullah positions in Yemen would stop. This decision was made after an agreement brokered by Oman, according to which Ansarullah pledged to stop attacks on US ships in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Trump stated in a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney: “The Houthis no longer want to fight.” However, the agreement does not include Ansarullah attacks on Israeli targets. Mahdi al-Mashat, head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, stressed that military support for Gaza would continue.
Operation “Rough Rider” Failed
Since March 2025, the United States has carried out more than 1,000 airstrikes on Yemeni positions under Operation “Rough Rider.” However, the Yemeni military has continued to attack Israeli-affiliated commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and beyond in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. “There is no limit to their ability to replace anything we destroy,” said former US ambassador to Yemen Gerald Feierstein.
Israeli reaction: concern and disappointment
Trump’s decision to halt attacks on Yemen has been met with negative reactions in Israel. Hebrew-language media outlets including Ma’ariv and Walla described the decision as “shocking” and “humiliating.” An Israeli official told the Israel Hayom newspaper: “Trump’s announcement to stop bombing Yemen is very bad news for Israel, we are waiting for Washington’s explanation.”
Israel’s Channel 14 also reported that shares in Israeli shipping company ZIM (ZIM) fell by about 7 percent after the announcement of the halt to US attacks on Yemen.
The Hebrew-language newspaper Ma’ariv mocked Trump’s recent threats to destroy Sanaa and wrote: “What happened today was the complete opposite of those threats. Trump announced a ceasefire and agreed to the conditions of the Ansar Allah movement to stop attacks on Yemen, while Ansar Allah’s threats against us continue.”
The Hebrew website Walla also pointed to the confusion of the Zionist regime and wrote: “Who is responsible for this political failure, according to which Israel learned about the ceasefire between the US and Ansar Allah on television?”
Israel’s Channel 12 also warned: “Israel has gradually entered a war of attrition with Ansar Allah, and further attacks will not make any difference, especially after the US bombed more than 800 targets without any results.”
In this regard, the US decision to stop attacks on Yemen is a sign of Washington’s strategic failure to contain the Yemenis. Despite the heavy military and human costs, the United States has failed to achieve its goals in Yemen. This retreat has not only weakened America’s credibility in the region, but has also increased Israel’s concerns.
Ansar Allah spokesman: It was America that called for a ceasefire
Ansar Allah spokesman and head of the Yemeni negotiating team, Mohammed Abdul Salam, said in an interview with Al-Masirah: “Yemen’s current position shows our strength and stability. This ceasefire request came to us from America through Oman.”
He emphasized: “We did not make any requests from America, but rather the Americans sent us their messages and requests through Oman.”
Abdul Salam also said: “Israel is very disappointed with America’s position, because America tried to save itself from the Yemeni quagmire.”
He considered the targeting of civilian facilities, including cement factories, power plants, water sources and airfields, to be a clear defeat for the enemy, adding: “Targeting civilians and public facilities is a clear defeat and cannot prevent us from supporting Gaza.”
The head of the Sana’a government’s negotiating team continued: “Yemen will not leave Gaza alone. It was America that called for a ceasefire. Yemen’s strong presence in the field is the best guarantee for the implementation of the agreement. What we say and what is stated in the statement of the Omani Foreign Ministry is the truth.”
Abdul Salam warned that anyone who intervenes in the aggression against Yemen must accept consequences and losses similar to those suffered by the Americans, and stated: "Israel wants to regain its lost credibility with these attacks, but these shows are useless."
