Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The 72-hour ceasefire, announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, began at 12:00 p.m. Moscow time on Wednesday, May 7. The ceasefire will last until Saturday morning, May 10.
The TASS news agency reported that the decision was announced by Putin in late April. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected the ceasefire proposal.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin has warned that Russian military forces are on alert and will respond if Ukraine violates the ceasefire. Dmitry Peskov, the Russian presidential spokesman, has stressed that Moscow’s position on the ceasefire has not changed and no new orders have been issued.
This is the third ceasefire since the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Two other ceasefires were previously announced for Christmas 2023 and Easter 2025, which Moscow says were not observed by Kiev on both occasions.
The current ceasefire also coincides with the historic anniversary of the Soviet victory over the Nazis in World War II, an occasion that continues to play a prominent role in Russian politics and historical identity.
