Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Tehran: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Atomic Energy Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a joint statement, strongly condemning the US, UK, France and Germany's move to pass a resolution against Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors, calling it an example of "using a technical institution as a political tool."
The statement reads: "This resolution lacks technical and legal foundations and was drafted solely for political motives. The Islamic Republic of Iran has always adhered to its safeguards obligations, and the Agency’s reports have so far not made any reference to deviations in Iran’s nuclear activities or violations of its obligations.”
Iran also described the content of the Agency’s latest report as “completely political and biased,” adding: “The four proposing countries have even gone beyond the Director General’s report and have drafted the provisions of a resolution that contradicts the same report.”
The joint statement emphasizes that because these countries were unable to find any ambiguity in Iran’s current nuclear activities, they have resorted to allegations related to more than 25 years ago; while these files have been closed according to the November 2015 resolution of the Agency’s Board of Governors.
In another part of the statement, the silence of these countries regarding the “Zionist regime’s weapons program” and this regime’s threats against peaceful installations of the countries that are members of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has been criticized.
Iran also pointed to the Western countries’ unfulfilled commitments under Article 6 of the NPT on nuclear disarmament and noted that Germany also hosts nuclear weapons, an action that contradicts the spirit and letter of the treaty.
The statement states: “This political approach seriously questions the legitimacy and impartiality of the Agency and shows that cooperation and transparency with the Agency, in the face of political behavior, are counterproductive.”
Iran’s countermeasures
In response to the resolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran announced that it had no choice but to respond. By order of the head of the Atomic Energy Organization, the following measures have been put on the immediate agenda:
- Launching a new enrichment center in a secure location
- Replacing first-generation centrifuges with advanced sixth-generation machines at the Martyr Dr. Ali Mohammadi (Fordow) site
Iran has announced that other measures are also being planned, which will be announced in due course.
