Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger plane crashed in a residential area on Wednesday, shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in India. Rescue workers have so far found at least 30 to 35 bodies in a building at the crash site, and India's health minister has announced that "many people have died" in the crash. The plane was carrying 242 people.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported, quoting the police commissioner of Ahmedabad, India; “There appear to be no survivors in the Air India crash.”
Police said the plane crashed in a residential area near the airport. “The building where the plane hit is a doctors’ hostel. We have cleared about 70-80 percent of the area,” a senior police officer in the Indian city of Ahmedabad said. Images from the scene showed thick smoke and extensive damage in a residential area, raising fears of civilian casualties on the ground.
Of the 242 people on board, 217 were adults and 11 were children, a source told Reuters. Air India said 169 of the passengers were Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian. The flight was from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick airport.
The flight tracking website reported that the plane was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, one of the most modern passenger jets in service. Boeing said it was aware of reports of the incident and was gathering more information to assist with the investigation. This is the first time a Boeing 787 has suffered a "hull loss" accident.
The exact cause of the crash is still unknown and Indian authorities have launched an investigation.
