Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Following the accumulated problems in the capital's urban structure, Kabul Municipality officials announced that a review and reform of the city's road network structure has been put on the agenda to respond to the challenges arising from uncontrolled population growth and the expansion of unplanned areas.
According to Engineer Faiq Ahmad Tasl, Head of Urban Infrastructure at Kabul Municipality, the existing urban design framework plan, which was approved in 1396 AH, was unable to meet the current needs of citizens due to numerous shortcomings. For this reason, in cooperation with the Ministry of Urban Development and Land, a road network improvement plan was prepared and approved through legal procedures.
The main goal of this plan is to create a regular and effective urban transportation system that can pave the way for balanced and sustainable development in Kabul city. The implementation of this plan will include the construction and development of roads based on the city’s vital priorities and the creation of the necessary infrastructure for urban services such as water supply, electricity, telecommunications, fiber optics, sewage, and green corridors.
The Kabul Municipality has emphasized that the successful implementation of this plan will not only improve traffic convenience and the quality of life of citizens, but will also provide the basis for attracting investment, economic growth, and promoting Kabul’s position as a modern and livable city.
According to surveys conducted by the Department of Statistics and Information, the population of Kabul has faced a high rate of migration and urbanization growth in recent years. Reports from the Ministry of Urban Development also show that more than 60% of Kabul’s areas are unplanned. This has put a huge strain on infrastructure, making such reforms even more necessary.
Experts believe that the road network reform plan in Kabul can be considered one of the most effective steps in improving the urban structure. Given that roads are the main communication arteries for other services, the implementation of these projects can play an important role in reducing traffic, increasing security, improving public services and even reducing pollution.
However, the full success of this plan is conditional on providing a stable budget, careful monitoring, preventing corruption and citizen cooperation. If implemented effectively, Kabul can become a successful model of urban development at the regional level.
