Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: More than 300,000 Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan from Iran in the past 12 days, the Islamic Emirate's Refugee Affairs Commission said on Monday. According to the agency, all these people entered the country through the Islam Qala border.
Ahmadullah Mottaki, the head of information and culture in Herat province and spokesman for the Refugee Commission, said on Saturday that 37,936 Afghan migrants had returned from Iran in the past day alone.
He also added that 26,000 of these migrants were forcibly deported by Iran.
Meanwhile, Baxter news agency reported that a total of 6,193 Afghan families returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan on Sunday.
The developments come as the United Nations warned on Thursday of the consequences of the mass returns, saying the process could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
The influx of refugees in a short period of time has raised concerns about the provision of basic facilities, shelter and health and education services to returnees inside Afghanistan.
