Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to Disarm on Friday

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: Today (Tuesday), the political wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) announced that the group's forces will disarm on Friday. This is despite the fact that the group announced yesterday that it would not allow journalists to cover the disarmament ceremony in Sulaymaniyah live due to security reasons.

 

This decision was made following the request of Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the PKK in Turkey. Ocalan had called for the disarmament of the group on (February 27, 2025). Following this request, the PKK announced its dissolution on May 22.

 

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was founded in 1978 by Abdullah Ocalan in southeastern Turkey and is based on Marxist-Leninist ideas. The group began its armed attacks on Turkey in 1984 with the aim of establishing an independent Kurdish state.

 

In recent years, the PKK and Turkey have been embroiled in a border dispute with Iraq, and many countries around the world consider the group a terrorist organization. Today, with the announcement of disarmament, it appears that the group is seeking a fundamental change in its approach and responding to Ocalan's demands.
