Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): This morning (Saturday, July 26) local time, Cambodian forces opened fire on Thai military positions in Trat province, and Thai forces responded with return fire, resuming military conflict between the two countries.
According to media reports, an armed conflict between the forces of the two countries began on July 24 (25 August) near the Ta Moan Thom temple. Both sides accused each other of starting the conflict.
Thailand had claimed that Cambodian forces first opened fire and sent a drone, and then the army responded with self-defense. Cambodia, in turn, announced that the Thai airstrike had initially initiated the aggression.
Now, in the latest reports, at 5:10 am local time today, Cambodian forces opened fire on Thai military positions in Trat province, and Thai forces responded with return fire, and the military conflict between the two countries resumed.
Yesterday, Cambodia's representative to the United Nations said after a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council that Cambodia calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and calls on the two countries to resolve their differences peacefully.
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to review the situation of border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which was also attended by the Thai delegation.
Following the Cambodian representative's statements, the Thai government announced last night that it agreed in principle with the ceasefire proposal, but that this action should be taken based on "appropriate conditions on the ground."
The Thai Foreign Ministry also announced on the social network X: Cambodian forces have been attacking Thai territory indiscriminately throughout the day. This behavior is a sign of a lack of goodwill and has put civilians at risk.
Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikongrat told AFP before the emergency Security Council meeting that the intensity of the fighting had decreased since Friday evening and that Thailand was open to negotiations, and that Malaysia might step in to mediate.
He stressed that if Cambodia wanted to resolve the issue through diplomatic means, either bilaterally or with the help of Malaysia, we were ready. But so far, we have not received any response from Cambodia.
Malaysia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN, and both Thailand and Cambodia are members of the regional organization.
