Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): A wave of tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific Ocean following a powerful 8.5-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The earthquake, which was recorded this morning by the Russian Academy of Sciences’ research center, is classified as a rare and exceptional earthquake in terms of intensity.
CNN reported that the earthquake was the strongest recorded in the world since 2011. Following it, tsunami warnings were issued for parts of the western coasts of Canada, the United States and even the Mexican border.
Chinese authorities have issued a tsunami warning for the eastern part of the country, along with warnings from US authorities and Southeast Asian countries such as Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. The Peruvian government has also issued a statement putting its coastal areas on alert.
The earthquake has once again raised concerns about tectonic activity in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
