Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)-International Service: International media have reported that a deadly riot has taken place in the Tuxpan prison in the Mexican state of Veracruz. The incident has left at least seven prisoners dead and 11 others injured.
According to the Veracruz State Public Security Department, the unrest began when a group of prisoners clashed with members of the “Grupo Sombra” gang, a group accused of extorting and threatening other prisoners and their families.
Videos posted on social media showed some inmates calling the riot a protest against the group's threats.
Security forces managed to restore order and extinguish the fires started by inmates on Sunday after hours of fighting.
Images from Tuxpan prison showed thick smoke billowing from the prison grounds and inmates with burns being taken to outside medical facilities for treatment.
Mexico's state prisons are particularly plagued by overcrowding and frequent violence caused by drug cartels and gangs. These clashes are often a reflection of the cartel's bloody rivalries outside the prison.
Last year, a bloody prison riot broke out in Ciudad Juárez, which resulted in the escape of 25 inmates and the death of several others. Human rights groups have repeatedly called for a thorough investigation and improvements in prison conditions to prevent such incidents from happening again.
