Forest fire alert level announced for the whole of Portugal
The Portuguese Foreign Ministry has sounded the alarm and announced a forest fire alert level for the whole of the country.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Citing the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Portuguese Foreign Minister has warned of a difficult week ahead. The Foreign Ministry has warned of the critical situation in Portugal until August 7.

The Federal Foreign Office has thus sounded the alarm and announced a forest fire alert level for the whole of the mainland. The alert is valid from August 3 to 7, 2025 and affects all areas of mainland Portugal - with the exception of the islands of Madeira and the Azores.

In a statement to the nation on Sunday (August 3), Portuguese Interior Minister Maria Lucia Amaral announced that the government has decided to declare a state of alert across mainland Portugal, given the worsening weather forecast, which indicates a significant risk of wildfires in rural areas. “Next week will be a difficult week, with more heatwaves and droughts expected,” Amaral explained.

Portuguese authorities expect temperatures to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country. In response, forestry agencies are increasing their staffing levels and intensifying ground and air patrols in areas at risk of forest fires.

The situation was particularly critical on Sunday in the area around Vila Real in northern Portugal, where hundreds of firefighters battled several large forest fires. Southern Europe has generally suffered from severe wildfires this summer, with Turkey, Greece and Spain also affected.

Portugal’s Foreign Ministry also urged travelers to take any information seriously. The National Agency for Natural Disasters and Civil Protection (ANEPC) also provides up-to-date information in English.

Portugal and neighboring Spain have been battling devastating wildfires for years.

After a wildfire season in 2017 that killed more than 100 people, Portugal significantly increased its spending on forest fire prevention and control. However, more than 29,000 hectares have been burned in the country this year alone, according to preliminary figures from the Forestry Agency.
