Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)-Kabul: The organization said in a report that drought is crippling agricultural crops, killing livestock and exacerbating food insecurity.
According to the FAO, one-third of the 9.5 million people expected to face acute hunger live in drought-affected areas.
The organization added that it needs $34.5 million for cash assistance, nutrition and irrigation for 1.04 million people.
FAO said in its report that Afghanistan is facing a severe and multifaceted drought crisis that has disrupted agricultural and livestock livelihoods in half of the country's provinces.
The organization's remote sensing and field assessments show that the north, northwest And the northeast of the country is among the areas hardest hit by the drought, and conditions are worsening.
For farming and pastoralist families who rely on seasonal rains for their food production, the growing drought poses a direct threat to their survival, the FAO said.
The organization noted that Afghanistan remains one of the world’s largest food crises.
However, the FAO said that so far this year, only 15 percent of its humanitarian funding needs have been met.
The coming weeks are crucial to providing life-saving agricultural assistance to affected communities, the organization said.
The FAO stressed that urgent, coordinated and targeted support is essential to prevent further agricultural losses, protect nutrition and incomes, and help pave the way for a more sustainable recovery.
