Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The press office of the Ministry of Energy and Water reported that Mujibur Rahman Omar Akhundzada, the Deputy Minister of Water of the Ministry, visited specialized dam design companies in Ankara during an official visit to Turkey.
In a meeting with officials of one of these companies, he discussed the design of dams, canals and water supply systems. In this meeting, the Turkish side emphasized that it is ready to cooperate in the design of water and energy projects in the country.
It was also noted that the country is currently facing serious challenges in accessing safe drinking water and generating sufficient electricity, and the Ministry of Energy and Water recently signed a multi-year contract worth $10 billion with Azizi Energy Company to generate electricity from various sources.
The Minister of Energy and Water also received the company’s interest in investing in the country’s water and energy projects in a separate meeting with representatives of the Turkish company Fermak, and a memorandum of understanding is set to be drawn up to continue the cooperation.
Earlier, in May 2023, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Energy and Water and the Turkish construction company 77 (77 Turkish Construction Company); an agreement aimed at investing in the production of 200 megawatts of wind power in Herat Province.
According to experts, the interest and entry of Turkish companies into the field of designing water and energy projects could be an effective step in changing the situation of vital infrastructure. Studies show that cooperation in design, especially in the dam and wind power sectors, will lead to technology transfer, the use of practical experiences, and structural reform of the water and energy system. Experts say that if the cooperation process proceeds with transparency and proper management, not only will energy production capacity increase, but employment opportunities and regional development will also be strengthened.
