India hands over Afghan consulate in Hyderabad to Islamic Emirate

9 Aug 2025 - 17:15

The media reported that the Indian government had handed over the management of the Afghan consulate in Hyderabad to representatives of the Islamic Emirate; The move is seen as a sign of tactical changes in India's foreign policy.

Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry has introduced Mohammad Rahman as the new diplomat at the consulate, media reported, citing diplomatic sources. Indian media reported that he had officially taken over the mission.

Meanwhile, Syed Mohammad Ibrahimkhel, the former consul general during the republican era, has been transferred to the Afghan embassy in New Delhi and continues his diplomatic activities there.

Earlier last year, the Afghan consulate in Mumbai was handed over to another representative of the Islamic Emirate, Ikramuddin Kamil.

Indian sources told local media that the Afghan embassy in New Delhi is likely to be handed over to the Islamic Emirate by the end of this year. "Such appointments show the Islamic Emirate's desire to maintain diplomatic contacts with India," an Indian official said on condition of anonymity. They seem to be moving towards strengthening formal engagement with New Delhi.”

There are also reports that a high-level delegation from the country is likely to visit India next month. If the trip takes place, it could be an important step in expanding bilateral relations.
