Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: General Asim Munir, Pakistan Army Chief, met with General John Don Keane, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, during an official visit to the United States and discussed common professional interests. He also invited General Keane to visit Pakistan.
Munir also attended a ceremony during which General Michael E. Corella handed over the US Central Command to Brad Cooper after his retirement. The Pakistani army announced that Munir emphasized continued cooperation in addressing common security challenges at the ceremony.
This visit took place less than two months after Munir had a private meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. As army chief, he plays a key role in Pakistan's domestic and foreign policy.
US-Pakistan relations are improving after years of tension. Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has praised Trump for brokering a ceasefire with India in May, although Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has denied Trump's role.
Trump has also imposed lower tariffs on goods imported from Pakistan than from neighboring countries such as India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
