Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The Free Journalists Union of Afghanistan issued a statement today (Monday, August 11) strongly condemning the direct and targeted attack by the Zionist regime on a media tent in front of the main gate of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, which led to the martyrdom of five Al Jazeera journalists and cameramen.
The statement said that this act was premeditated and completely deliberate, and was a clear violation of the principles of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions, and freedom of the press, and is undoubtedly a clear example of a war crime. The union, expressing sympathy with the families of the victims and the media community in Gaza, emphasized the need to prosecute and punish the perpetrators of this crime quickly in international courts.
The Free Journalists' Union of Afghanistan further added: "Silencing the voice of truth will not only prevent the disclosure of the facts, but will also strengthen the determination of free journalists around the world to continue their professional mission."
According to reports, the martyrs of this attack are: Anas Al-Sharif, a famous Al Jazeera journalist nicknamed "The Voice of Gaza"; Mohammad Qariqa, Al Jazeera reporter; Ibrahim Zahir, cameraman; Momin Aliwa, cameraman; and Mohammad Naufal, reporter and assistant photojournalist.
The Israeli army confirmed in an official statement that it directly targeted the group of journalists, but claimed that Anas al-Sharif had links to the Palestinian resistance. This is despite the fact that Anas al-Sharif’s house was previously targeted in an attack, and his father was martyred in that attack.
The director of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza announced that seven people, including the five journalists, died in the attack. Thus, the number of martyrs of media personnel since the start of the Gaza war on October 7 has reached 237.
In response to the incident, the Hamas movement called the assassination of Anas al-Sharif and Muhammad Qariqa a “barbaric crime” that demonstrates the complete collapse of the system of international values and laws.
According to the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) report, more than 200 journalists have been martyred by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 2023. Reporters Without Borders has filed four formal complaints with the International Criminal Court (ICC) over these crimes, calling for the Gaza journalists to be recognized as victims in the cases, not just witnesses.
Al Jazeera, the victims’ media network, has also called the attack “coordinated and premeditated assassination” and described it as a deliberate attempt to silence “the last independent voices in Gaza.”
Media observers believe that directly targeting journalists in Gaza is part of the Israeli regime’s strategy to stifle free information and prevent the recording of war crimes. Studies show that despite increasing international pressure, the lack of a binding mechanism to protect journalists in war zones has led to the continuation of such actions. Experts emphasize that prosecuting the perpetrators of these crimes in international courts can be an effective deterrent.
