Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the financial support of the World Bank, has reconstructed the irrigation system in Daikundi Province. This project has been able to irrigate 447 hectares of agricultural land for 2,300 farmers in the province.
According to a message published on the organization’s official page on the X network, the project includes a reconstructed irrigation system that includes 800 meters of irrigation canals, eight water storage ponds, 456 meters of protective walls, and the installation of a water channel.
This action was taken while the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) had previously warned of a severe drought in the country, pointing to reduced rainfall, increased temperatures, and reduced soil moisture.
According to the OCHA report, the drought crisis in the country is becoming a widespread humanitarian disaster, ranging from reduced seasonal rainfall to the destruction of water resources and the threat to agriculture. This drought has so far severely affected five provinces.
In this context, the FAO is increasing its emergency plans in the agriculture and livestock sectors to deal with these problems, and providing irrigation water is considered one of the most effective solutions in this regard.
According to agricultural and environmental experts, the reconstruction of irrigation systems in dry areas such as Daikundi is a valuable step towards combating the effects of climate change and drought. Studies show that such projects, although small-scale, contribute significantly to improving food security, increasing farmers' incomes, and economic sustainability of villages. Continued financial and technical support from international and domestic institutions is essential for the development of such projects.
