UN experts have urged the Pakistani government to halt the planned deportation of Afghan refugees and respect its international obligations. They said many of the refugees facing deportation have no home in Afghanistan to return to and lack family and community support networks.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: “Pakistan has an obligation under international human rights and refugee law not to return anyone to a place where they would face serious threats to their life or freedom,” the UN experts said in a joint statement.
The Pakistani government has set September 1 as the deadline for return. This includes PoR cardholders.
Migrants living in Pakistan include people who migrated decades ago or were born there.
They stressed that the obligation of non-refoulement is not optional, it is a cornerstone of treaty and customary international law that must be respected.
The UN experts said many refugees facing deportation have no home to return to in Afghanistan and lack family and community support networks.
“We are particularly concerned about the situation of female-headed households and those without a mahram (male guardian), who are at greater risk,” they said.
“We call on the Pakistani government to immediately halt planned deportations and respect the principle of non-refoulement,” they said.
The experts called on the international community to increase its support for the Pakistani government and host communities.
They also deplored the scaling back and halting of resettlement programs by governments that had promised Afghan citizens, saying that these countries had turned their backs on the principles of international solidarity and responsibility-sharing with countries hosting refugees.
