Afghanistan's national futsal team has maintained its 33rd position in the world in the latest FIFA rankings released on Aug 30.
Brazil, Portugal and Spain are ranked first and third respectively. Iran, Thailand and Japan are the top three teams in Asia.
Afghanistan is ranked seventh in the Asian rankings, behind Vietnam. Uzbekistan is fourth with four places up and Vietnam is sixth with five places up. In contrast, Indonesia has dropped two places to fifth place.
Among the major changes, the Swedish team has recorded the most climb with 17 places and earned 34.12 positive points; Greece has dropped eight points and Azerbaijan has dropped the most with 26.87 points.
According to futsal experts, Afghanistan's position among the top 35 teams in the world, despite the limitations of facilities, shows the growth of the sport in the country.
The surveys show that Afghanistan's continued presence in the top teams requires careful planning and financial and technical support. Observers believe that investing in the domestic league and holding friendly matches with Asian teams could improve the country's position in the rankings.
