The Trump administration has begun the process of changing the name of the US Department of Defense to the Department of War
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: According to the Wall Street Journal, the proposal was submitted by Representative Greg Stubby, a Republican from Florida, as an amendment to the annual defense policy bill and indicates support for this change from some members of Congress.
The White House has announced that this change may require congressional approval, but is considering alternative ways to implement it. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly confirmed this approach: “As President Trump has emphasized, the military must focus on offense, not just defense.”
Trump also said the name “War Department” had a stronger tone, noting that the United States had won world wars under that name. “We want to defend, but we also want to attack,” he added.
The name “War Department” was used from 1789 to 1947. That year, with the passage of the National Security Act, a new structure was formed called the “National Military Organization,” and in 1949, the name “Department of Defense” was officially replaced to convey a softer image of American military policy.
