Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)-Kabul: From yesterday evening until this morning (Friday, September 4), five relatively severe earthquakes have shaken eastern Afghanistan.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the latest earthquake occurred at 6:46 this morning local time with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale at a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded 40 kilometers southwest of Asadabad, the capital of Kunar province.
Before that, at 6:00 am, a stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred in the same area of Kunar. This earthquake also occurred at a relatively shallow depth and its tremors were felt strongly in the surrounding areas.
In the morning, at around 2:16 am, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 was recorded 35 kilometers northwest of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province. The US Seismological Center has also announced the depth of this earthquake as 10 kilometers.
Hours earlier, at 10:58 pm last night, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 was recorded in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar.
The first earthquake in this series of tremors occurred last evening, about 35 kilometers southwest of Asadabad. The magnitude of the earthquake was reported to be 5.6 on the Richter scale, making it one of the strongest earthquakes of the night.
According to local reports, last night’s earthquakes caused significant damage, especially in Kunar. As a result of these earthquakes, a number of houses were destroyed in the center of Kunar province and in Soki district. Local sources have confirmed that one person was killed and 14 injured were taken to the hospital from this area.
Local authorities in Nangarhar and Laghman provinces have also announced that one person was killed and at least 12 others were injured following the earthquakes last night and this morning.
Reports indicate that tremors from these earthquakes were also felt in Kabul and Panjshir provinces.
Local sources in eastern Afghanistan have described the strength of these earthquakes as “severe.” Geological experts believe that the proximity of the epicenters of these earthquakes to the earth's surface was the main factor in the high intensity of the tremors and the damage caused by them.
It is recalled that on Sunday evening of this week, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 shook Kunar province. That earthquake caused heavy damage and casualties. According to official statistics announced by the government, the number of victims of that event has reached 2,205 people and thousands of others have been injured.
