Pakistan rejects UN request to suspend deportation of Afghan refugees
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has rejected a UN request to suspend the deportation of Afghan refugees. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has earlier called on the Pakistani government to suspend the deportation of Afghan refugees following the deadly earthquake in Kunar.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Shafqat Ali Khan said on Monday that the decision was the government's and would be implemented.

Earlier, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi had called on the Pakistani government to suspend the deportation of Afghan refugees following the deadly earthquake in Kunar.

Richard Bennett, the UN Human Rights Council's special rapporteur on Afghanistan, made a similar request to Pakistan.

A Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman said there would be no suspension.

He stressed that Pakistan has adopted an open and liberal policy in issuing visas to Afghan citizens.

The Pakistani government had set September 1 as the deadline for the departure of refugees whose temporary residence cards had expired.
