Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: Israel Shomir, head of the operations department of the Israeli army's general staff, announced that he doubts the effect of the occupation of the Gaza Strip on the defeat of the Hamas movement.
In an interview with an Israeli Army Radio reporter, he stated: "I am not convinced that control over Gaza can defeat Hamas. It is difficult to determine the point at which this movement surrenders."
Referring to the status of the army's reserves, Shomir also said: "It is not clear how many days of service the reserves will be called up for in 2026."
Asked about the possibility of continuing military operations in the form of the next stages of Gideon's Chariots, he added: "I don't want to get to that point, but it could happen."
Operation Gideon's Chariots 2, after three weeks of intense bombardment of the Gaza Strip, officially began last Wednesday. The move has been met with a wave of criticism and protests within Israel, especially from families of Israeli prisoners who are concerned for the lives of their loved ones.
The occupation army radio is set to broadcast the full interview with the military official on Sunday.
While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stressed that continuing military operations in the Gaza Strip can destroy the Hamas movement and return Israeli prisoners, evidence on the ground shows that these goals cannot be achieved.
This Sunday morning, more than 700 days after the start of the war in Gaza, warning sirens and distress signals were activated in several settlements around the Gaza Strip. Israeli defense systems managed to intercept two of the shots, but the incident once again showed that rocket attacks from Gaza continue and that the security of settlers in southern Israel is not guaranteed.
This comes despite Netanyahu’s recent speeches introducing military operations such as Gideon’s Chariots as the final solution to end the Hamas threat and return Israeli prisoners. However, the continued rocket attacks and the activation of security alerts in border areas have raised doubts about the effectiveness of this strategy.
Analysts believe that despite the heavy human and military costs, not only has Hamas not been destroyed, but it has also maintained its ability to launch rockets. Families of Israeli prisoners have also repeatedly held protest rallies, demanding a change in the government’s approach and reaching a prisoner exchange agreement.
