UN cooperates with National Archives to restore historical monuments and build capacity
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Afghanistan promised in a meeting with the head of the National Archives of the Ministry of Information and Culture that the organization will cooperate with the National Archives in the field of restoration of monuments, training of professional staff and building capacity.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) – Kabul: The press office of the Ministry of Information and Culture has issued a press release saying that Roza Otunbayeva, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan, during a meeting with Qari Obaidullah Hanif, head of the Ministry’s National Archives, emphasized the UN’s support for the preservation and restoration of historical monuments.

Qari Obaidullah Hanif, while providing information about the activities of the National Archives, said in this meeting that this cultural institution needs to expand relations with other archives of the world. Referring to the existence of common historical monuments in the National Archives, he called for joint efforts to protect this valuable heritage.

The head of the National Archives also outlined the needs of the institution in the areas of restoration of artifacts, capacity building, training of professional staff, and other areas, and requested cooperation from the United Nations.

Roza Otunbayeva also described Afghanistan as a country rich in historical and cultural heritage, adding: “After 45 years, a good opportunity has been provided that should be used effectively, especially in the cultural sector.” She promised that the United Nations would have practical cooperation with the National Archives in the aforementioned areas.

The UN Special Representative also visited various sections of the National Archives and closely observed some historical artifacts.

The National Archives of Afghanistan is one of the most important centers for preserving historical artifacts, manuscripts, and national documents that have suffered extensive damage during decades of war. Experts have repeatedly warned that without technical and financial support, many of these artifacts will be at risk of destruction.

Observers believe that the UN's cooperation with the National Archives could be a turning point in the protection of Afghanistan's cultural heritage. Studies show that the international community's attention to culture, in addition to preserving historical identity, also provides a basis for increasing the country's international interactions in the scientific and cultural fields.
